Jade Hartshorn
Undergraduate student ambassador award winner.
Why did you get involved in physics outreach activity at university?
I had some previous experience in presenting and teaching groups before university, and wanted to try applying it to something else I’m more knowledgeable on. I wanted the opportunity to inspire people to take an interest in something I am passionate about.
How would you say you benefited, both professionally and personally, from your physics outreach work at university?
Being able to share my knowledge with a receptive audience, and see people’s enthusiasm and understanding of physics grow, is something I have immensely enjoyed. Working in outreach has improved both my ability and confidence in communicating effectively to a wide range of audiences. This was a huge help when it came to interviews for graduate jobs, as I’d had lots of experience explaining scientific concepts to an audience.
What hints or tips would you give to other students who are thinking of getting involved in outreach?
My advice would always be to just try it – you might find it’s something you really enjoy. Don’t be afraid to let your enthusiasm and interest in physics show, the people you are talking to are there because they want to hear from you. Being passionate is the key to making whatever you’re doing more enjoyable and approachable, allowing the audience to get involved and keeping their enthusiasm going.
