Improving primary physics

Improving primary physics CPD days provide FREE professional development for primary science leads and KS2 teachers of physics.

Book now: light and sound

What will I learn?

Our FREE Improving primary physics CPD days explore purposeful practicals and effective pedagogical approaches. These practical hands-on professional development days are designed for primary science leads and teachers of KS2 physics.

  • Identifying and addressing misconceptions in KS2 physics
  • Developing effective approaches to build and embed subject specific vocabulary in KS2
  • Using effective strategies to ensure classroom practicals are purposeful learning opportunities
  • Adapting and scaffolding learning for greater accessibility and real-world relevance

Framed by the recommendations in the EEF Improving Primary Science guidance report, each purposeful day of learning will include four workshops filled with practical classroom-ready advice that you can easily implement in your lessons.

“This is the first time I’ve genuinely looked forward to teaching these topics rather than worrying about getting the physics wrong.”

Light up learning

A FREE day of professional development for primary science leads and KS2 teachers exploring purposeful practicals and effective pedagogical approaches in the topics of light and sound.

Workshop 1: seeing the light

  • Understand how pupils’ knowledge of light develops across KS2
  • Understand how to use effective models, demonstrations and explanations to support pupils’ learning
  • Recognise and know how to address common misconceptions

Workshop 2: sound foundations

From vibrations to understanding:

  • Strengthen your understanding of sound
  • Recognise and know how to address common misconceptions
  • Understand how to use effective models, demonstrations and explanations to support pupils’ learning

Workshop 3: purposeful practical in light and sound

Making investigations matter

  • Develop your understanding of purposeful practical work.
  • Identify how practical activities support pupils’ science learning.
  • Apply principles of effective practical design to your own teaching.

Workshop 4: Physics in the real world

Explore ways to link learning about light and sound to real-world context.

Can’t make these dates or locations? We will be holding more light and sound Improving Primary Physics CPD days in June 2027. With new primary physics topics for 2027/28. Sign up to our newsletter to receive dates and locations as soon as they are available.
