Martyn Wells is optical lead for the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) on the James Webb Space Telescope.

You can find an animation on the ESA website that summarises Martyn’s work on MIRI. “Making sure all these light paths deliver the image from the sky to the detectors was my job on MIRI – 15 years work in 1.5minutes!”

The James Webb Space Telescope is due to launch in December 2021 – it will be the biggest space telescope of all time, able to explore the universe as never before. The successor to the Hubble Space Telescope, Webb has been built by, and will be used by, a global team including people all over the UK. It is amazing technology which will discover incredible things!
