The Coastal Energy Internships programme normally provides bursaries for sixth form students to undertake a 20-day placement with a local energy company in the summer between Year 12 and 13.
The scheme aims to provide high quality opportunities for young people to gain a deep understanding of what jobs are available in the energy industry, as well as providing the students with a placement that utilises and enhances their STEM skills in a business environment.
Coastal Energy research projects
In 2020, coronavirus meant that work-based placements were not possible. But we still wanted to ensure that students were aware of the opportunities that available in their local energy sector.
With support from Vattenfall, ScottishPower Renewables and James Fisher Marine Services, we have developed a project-based Coastal Energy programme. The project resources are still available for students to complete giving a fantastic insight into this growing sector.
Watch the introductory video and read the offshore wind research project document to learn more. You can then view the project brief and further information from each company to decide which research you want to complete.
Students will undertake independent project work based on local industry.
- Developing an offshore wind farm an offshore wind farm (Vattenfall)
- Building an offshore wind farm (ScottishPower Renewables)
- Below the horizon (James Fisher Marine Services)
The projects can be completed by any students but some additional support is available from college champions to students from schools and colleges already involved in Coastal Energy internships*.
If you have any questions, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org. We will aim to respond to technical questions within two weeks. If you are looking for a mentor for your project, you may wish to contact your local STEM ambassador hub who could help you look for a suitable STEM ambassador to support you.
When the projects have been successfully completed, students can apply for a Gold CREST Award.
