Investigate the best way to find, identify and remove unexploded ordinances like bombs, shells and munitions from offshore building sites.
Unexploded Ordinance Target Investigation
Unexploded ordnance (UXO, sometimes abbreviated as UO), unexploded bombs (UXBs), and explosive remnants of war (ERW or ERoW) are explosive weapons that did not explode and have sunk to the sea floor. They include bombs, shells, grenades, land mines, naval mines, cluster munition, and other munitions. They still pose a risk of detonation, sometimes many decades after they were used or discarded. In addition to the obvious danger of explosion, buried UXO can cause environmental contamination. When munitions are found, they are destroyed in controlled explosions by experts in that field.
In windfarm or platform construction UXO can cause big issues, so the first phase is to search for these devices and then mark then as potential UXOs (pUXOs). Not every target will be an explosive device – sometimes it’s a large bolder – but even these need to be moved for cables to be laid.Once this has been done the next phase is to revisit these locations, dredge around the target and designate that item as a bolder or a confirmed UXO (cUXO)The third phase is to remove or detonate these targets and make the construction area free of obstruction.
Your task will be to act as project manager and tender for this task. You will investigate equipment used for sonar identification and types of UXO.You will need to organise equipment and ship selection, procedures, documentation, time scale, costing and program of activities and write these into a tender document.
