Subsea Cable Quality Control

JDR Cables

Quality Control in Subsea Cable Manufacturing

What is the project:

High-voltage subsea cables must withstand the harsh offshore environment throughout their operational lifetime. This project will explore how equipment is used to build up the cable layer by layer. You will then investigate how slight changes in the precise dimensions, alignment, and material application can affect the final product.

How this project is useful:

High-voltage subsea cables operate in challenging offshore environments where failure is extremely costly and disruptive. High manufacturing standards are therefore critical. This project provides an opportunity to review how manufacturing tolerances are monitored and controlled across all stages of production. The final project report will help identify how processes reduce risk and ensure compliance of engineering standards.

Project outcome:

  • Written report summarising the manufacturing stages investigated and how quality processes support long-term cable reliability and safety
  • Present findings in a presentation

Project type:

Practical Investigation

Key skills:

  • Data analysis
  • Research
  • Problem Solving
  • Measurement and tolerance verification

Location:

On site at:
Wilson Ave, East Sleekburn, NE22 7BL
