River Depth Assessment

Port of Blyth

Historical River Channel Depth Assessment

What is this project:

We plan to deepen the water in the Port of Blyth by dredging the riverbed to remove soil and rock. To help plan this dredging, we need to know how the depth of the river has changed during the Port’s history. You will use data to map the river’s depth through history.

How this project is useful:

Deepening the river will help ships used to build and maintain wind farms to use the Port of Blyth more easily.

Project outcome:

  • Retrieve historical river depth measurements from the Port’s archives
  • Analyse these data with modern tools to map the river’s depth through history
  • Report your findings, including your map of the historical depth of the river

Project type:

Research

To do this you will:

  • Retrieve historical depth measurements and other data from Port archives
  • Digitise this information and add it to the Port’s information system
  • Analyse the data and plot out the maximum depths on a plan of the river
  • You may also get an opportunity to witness marine site investigation works on board a work vessel

Key skills and interests:

  • Data Analysis
  • CAD
  • Research
  • Attention to Detail
  • Maritime Engineering

Location:

On site at:
Commissioners House, Wensleydale Terrace, Blyth, Northumberland, NE24 3DY
