SSCS
Design and Build a Flume Tank
Design and Build a Flume Tank
SSCS develops innovative solutions to protect underwater structures like cables and wind turbines from seabed erosion, known as scour. A small-scale flume tank will enable cost-effective testing of our new scour protection systems, supporting innovation in sustainable offshore engineering solutions.
Aims:
- To research and design a small-scale flume tank for testing scour protection solutions.
- Create a methodology for conducting controlled experiments to analyze the performance of SSCS products.
To do this you will:
Interns will conduct desk-based research on flume tank designs, flow dynamics, and sediment transport. They will may use CAD software to design the tank, selecting appropriate materials and dimensions.
If time permits, they will assist in construction and testing.
They should focus on cost-effective, scalable solutions relevant to SSCS’s needs. Support will be provided by SSCS, offering guidance on hydrodynamics, scour processes, and practical fabrication methods.
This is a team project.

Host company information:
SSCS develops innovative solutions to protect underwater structures like cables and wind turbines from seabed erosion, known as scour. We design and install frond mats, flexible seaweed-like structures, that help trap sand and stabilize the seabed. Our work combines engineering, marine science, and environmental sustainability to support offshore energy and coastal protection. We also research new ways to improve these solutions through testing, data analysis, and real-world trials.
