Energy Jobs of the Future: What Skills will the Net Zero Workforce need?

Energy Jobs of the Future: What Skills will the Net Zero Workforce need?

The UK is changing how it generates the energy it needs. This is changing the types of jobs people need to do in the energy industry, and the skills they need to do those jobs.

Aims:

So that young people can learn the skills they will need to work in these new jobs, somebody needs to study which skills they will need.

You will investigate how the changes to the UK’s energy industry are creating new careers, identify where there are skills shortages and explore how young people can prepare for future energy jobs.

To do this you will:

Research Energy Careers:

  • Research real job roles in offshore wind, hydrogen, and nuclear (e.g., wind turbine technician, hydrogen engineer, nuclear safety specialist etc.).
  • Analyse data to identify the most in-demand skills in these sectors.
  • Speak to industry professionals or apprentices to get first-hand insights into energy careers.
  • If direct interviews aren’t possible, watch recorded career talks or read case studies

Research Skills Gaps:

  • Use government and industry reports to find where the biggest skills shortages exist.
  • Investigate why certain roles are hard to fill (lack of training, location, etc.).

Final Output:

  • “Designing the future workforce”: Imagining that you are advising the UK Government on how to fix skills shortages in clean energy, create a short report describing three to five key actions for the government to help train the next generation of workers.
  • Create a student-friendly guide: “How to Get a Job in Clean Energy”
