Environmental Challenges of Removing Offshore Windfarm Structures

Environmental Challenges of Removing Offshore Windfarm Structures

If we are to build windfarms offshore, we need to know what to do with them when they reach the end of their useful life. So, we need to document and fully understand how the removal of offshore windfarms can change marine ecosystems that have become dependent on the structure being there. The concern is that complete removal of these windfarm structures could lead to a significant loss of established habitats and the species they support.

Aims:

To research the available data on what role offshore Man-Made Structures (MMS) play in their surrounding ecosystem. You will also produce a report on your findings.

To do this you will:

  • Research a desk-based review of existing data
  • Create libraries / databases of these data
  • Produce a report and poster of your findings
