Investigate different types of Nature Inclusive Designs for offshore and marine projects.
Review of Nature Inclusive Designs for Marine Infrastructure
Our clients (developers), are seeking innovative, sustainable, ecologically friendly designs to incorporate into their proposed projects. It is becoming increasing important that developers identify such options at the early bid stage. For us in the Marine Capital Project Delivery Ecology Team at ERM, it is important for our consultants to get a wide understanding of current thinking on these designs so we are well placed to support our clients in the future.
The aim of the project would be to undertake an evidence review of different engineering and scientific design options for nature inclusive design (NIDs) for a range of marine infrastructure. This would include for coastal defences, subsea cables, and offshore renewable developments. Should additional time be available during the internship, we would also provide training for the intern in how to the GIS mapping software QGIS to learn how to create marine maps of UK sea regions.
During the internship, you will conduct desk-based research (use of online search engines and data portals), of peer-review papers and grey literature and use software to develop of catalogues and visual aids. You will have the support of the staff at the Norwich Office and remotely with wider members of the Ecology team. You will produce a list of NID products and innovations currently under development with a report on the effectiveness of such designs. You will also summarise your findings in a presentation.
