Life Saving Rules

Life Saving Rules

Ports are vital to a maritime nation like the UK. Ports are busy workplaces with heavy machinery, tall structures and other risks to workers’ safety. So, everyone who works at our ports needs to be committed to and understand the that are rules in place to keep everyone safe.

To enhance our health and safety messaging across ABP, we are introducing our new Life Saving Rules (LSR). These rules are a well-established safety approach in high-risk industries and have been proven to reduce major injuries and fatalities.

Aims:

This project will consider how to integrate our new Life Saving Rules safety approach into what our workers do every day.

To do this you will:

  • Review common port activities
  • Analyse data from accident report forms to identify patterns in workplace accidents
  • Identify connections between hazards encountered during port activities and the Life Saving Rules
  • Research the psychology of behaviour change and strategies for communicating safety information
  • Design communication materials to share with port workers to build awareness of how to implement the new safety rules in their daily activities, for example through “Tool Box Talks”
  • Explore how other users of the port manage safety communications within their industry – for example on board Vessels and Road Transport

Key skills and interests:

  • Research
  • Problem Solving
  • Teamwork
  • Communication
  • Self-Motivation
  • Independent Working
  • Graphic Design
