Identify sustainable ways to transport crew and materials to offshore wind farms in the future.

Investigating Service Vessels for Future Offshore Wind Farms

As offshore wind farms get larger and more complex, this calls for greater need for transporting both trained technicians and their equipment out to sea. With newer wind farms also further from the coast, modern supporting vessels have become large enough to accommodate these personnel too, and in great comfort given the period they will spend offshore.

The sustainability of these vessels has therefore become paramount importance to offshore wind developers, who want to ensure their projects have a minimal impact on the environment as possible, through construction, operations, and maintenance, right up to decommissioning at least 30 years in the future. This project will focus on future fleets, having you research what options for powering and operating vessels are more sustainable, efficient and affordable than others.

Throughout your internship with the Norfolk Offshore Wind Zone, you will learn about their world-leading projects, which upon completion, could power 10% of UK homes. You will be based locally in Norfolk with their Stakeholder and Community Engagement team, who alongside your research task, will link you with members of the Norfolk Zone team to provide guidance in your project. You will get the opportunity to join them on site visits, seeing the installation of ducting for the underground HVDC onshore transmission, and meet organisations across Norfolk in the project supply chain.

By the end of the internship, you will present your findings of the project to members of the Norfolk Zone team, and potentially at a larger scale following the programme at events such as East Wind and EEEGR conferences. You will also produce a reflective report as per the requirements of the CREST Award, in which you can showcase the wider variety of experiences gained through this project.

This is a team project.
