Scottish Power Renewables

Investigate how new digital twin technology can be used to improve operations.

Digital Innovation in the Offshore Wind Sector

Innovation is frequently referred to as a “Game Changer”. However, to better understand why and how this is the case, it is very valuable to refer to specific areas where adopting an innovative approach or technology has made a sustainable improvement. Advances in digital technology offer opportunities enabling industry to become more connected with equipment and assets, optimising performance, safety and risk using digital models (or digital twins).

For this project, the intern will be asked to conduct research and develop a report on the concept of digital twins and how they may benefit the offshore wind industry. They will consider challenges the industry faces and how this technology could be used to respond to them and to improve performance in offshore wind development and operation.

In particular, you will research the challenges that Scottish Power faces, the actions required to address these challenges, what benefits digital twins offer and how they differ from the status quo, and what risks do the new technologies pose. You will present your findings in a report detailing how digital twins are applied and how they can be used to optimise the company’s operations.

This project would suit an intern with aspirations of working with new, cutting-edge technologies in the energy industry. Working with Iberdrola Renewables Offshore, they will gain experience of engineering across a multi-national organisation.
