MarineSpace

Develop a library of images to help marine scientists identify species and habitats in Marine Protected Areas.

Developing an In-House Marine Image Library

MarineSpace has been commissioned to undertake a wide range of digital imagery analysis projects for industry and statutory nature conservation bodies (e.g JNCC). This has involved our marine scientists identifying and analysing large collections of underwater videos and stills of important Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and subsea assets (e.g. subsea cables and pipelines) to record species and habitats present.

As part of the professional development and recruitment strategy for our Ecology Team, it will be valuable to develop a resource library of example images that staff can use for training and personal development. This project will require the Intern to analyse images and videos to catalogue species, habitats, and other important features.

The intern will be provided with training and resources to help with the identification of marine species and habitats. They will use these to build a catalogue of selected example images to make a training library, along with documentation about how to use the library and any missing data.

If time allows, an additional bespoke research-based task could be completed working with one of the Topic Leads on their area of work
