The Ogden Teacher Network

Published: 7 February 2020

The Ogden Trust has been working with teachers across its programmes for many years and is very aware of the national issues surrounding teacher recruitment and retention, especially within physics. The Trust wants to continue to support teachers (and potential teachers) from across the Ogden network at all stages of their careers and we are pleased to launch the Ogden Teacher Network.

This new network will bring together teachers who have previously been involved with the Trust and will provide ongoing professional development experiences for these teachers of physics at all levels.

Opportunities in the teacher network are in four categories – physics knowledge and science capital; physics teaching expertise; education research; and leadership in teaching physics. Within these categories there will be various opportunities for teachers including mentoring, training, research, trips and events.

An annual conference – Physics Futures – will bring the teacher network together to share practice, ideas and the latest thinking in education research and evaluation; it will offer a supportive networking opportunity to celebrate the physics teachers who are inspiring the future generations and really making physics matter.

“Supporting and empowering teachers is at the heart of the Trust,” says Clare Harvey, Chief Executive. “Without great physics teachers inspiring the next generation we cannot affect a long term change on the national picture for physics – a continued shortage of physics teachers will perpetuate a decline in people pursuing the subject, which can only be detrimental.

“We hope that the teacher network will support teachers throughout their careers and especially at important pinch points: in their early careers when they may be doubting their decision to go into teaching; or in established careers where teachers may be feeling unappreciated and overworked, for example. The network will offer encouragement, opportunities and support that will hopefully allow a love of physics teaching to continue and to thrive.”

Teachers who have previously been involved with the Ogden Trust in some form, for example as a scholar, a Teach Physics intern, or teaching at a school partnership school, are eligible to join the teacher network. If you believe you are eligible and have not been contacted about the network, please email outlining your previous experience with the Trust.
