Sparking Wonder

Published: 1 February 2021

“I’m thrilled to share this collection of science tricks that I have been using for years in my own science shows. I hope you can now use them to continue to spark wonder in your classroom.”
Dr Matt Pritchard

Following a grant from The Ogden Trust, science Magician Dr Matt Pritchard has launched Sparking Wonder – an online collection of easy to implement science magic tricks and stunts that have been designed to provide a ‘wow factor’ in physics learning. The resources can be used for primary and secondary education – offering inspiration for all!

The detailed e-book includes surprises, counter-intuitive examples, and beautiful demonstrations of physics. It is written specifically for teachers to use in lessons, home learning and STEM clubs without needing to rely on specialist knowledge or elaborate equipment.

Sparking Wonder provides a theoretical underpinning as to why mystery and wonder are at the heart of both learning and science discovery; scattered throughout the resource are short essays exploring the challenges of sparking wonder and cultivating curiosity. The resource is supported by downloadable PDFs and instructional videos.

“Wonder is a state where you playfully explore mysteries and imagine new possibilities.”
Dr Matt Pritchard

Over the past 12 years, Matt has developed and refined many science tricks and demonstrations that he has used in teaching, shows and outreach. This project has enabled him to collate and present the fun and the theory behind the tricks which will capture the imagination of teachers and learners alike. Behind the wow, Matt explains the physics, with presentation ideas, safety notes, further investigation ideas and links to real-world applications.
