Celebrating the NTLT science ambassadors.

Published: 24 April 2025

A science ambassador programme has been running at the North Tyneside Learning Trust (NTLT), delivered in partnership between The Ogden Trust, the British Science Association and Promoting Women in Science.

The programme was developed to increase students’ confidence, science capital and transferable skills such as presentation, teamwork, and planning, and it has enabled students to work towards CREST awards. Forty-three students have been trained as science ambassadors, equipping them with the skills and confidence to deliver hands-on science to younger pupils. These ambassadors have provided relatable role models to the younger pupils and have contributed to building a strong science ethos in their schools and communities.

The ambassadors, who came from four secondary and middle schools in the Trust, led science clubs at four local primary schools. Each of the ambassadors achieved their Bronze CREST award and supported and encouraged 45 primary pupils to achieve their Star CREST award.

“This is one of my favourite programmes to work on,” enthuses Lorraine Coghill, Deputy Director of Science Engagement at Durham University and Regional Representative (Northeast) for the Ogden Trust, who helped to co-ordinate the project delivery. “Working with and supporting wonderfully inspiring young people who take the lead in developing their own skills and seek to support and engage others. It is a joy and a privilege to see them develop their confidence, skills and ideas.”

Programme participants gathered to receive their CREST awards at a celebration event, hosted at Durham University and supported by Durham technicians and academics. The ambassadors delivered science sessions for the primary pupils and there was a planetarium show and workshops for everyone to enjoy.

It was wonderful to all come together to celebrate the achievements,” concludes Lorraine. “The ambassadors are such wonderful role models who I am sure will go on to great things.”
