Last month, the third inter-school physics quiz for Year 8 students in the Ogden Leicestershire Partnership was held at the Abbey Pumping Station Museum in Leicester. Four schools competed in this annual event, with teams from Manor School at Oadby, Hinkley Academy, Welland Park Academy and The Roundhill Academy taking part in this year’s fiercely fought contest.
Each of the schools sent along a team of three budding scientists, who had already won their heats in the initial intra-school selection process.
In the atmospheric surroundings of the pumping room, students were set a series of challenges aimed at testing their general scientific knowledge but centred on physics. Students identified famous names in physics, tested their mathematical skills, identified mystery substances using empirical evidence, and finally competed head to head in a quick-fire round.
The competition was close, however the Roundhill Academy eventually triumphed – with an especially strong showing in the mystery substances round. The partnership trophy and goodies were presented to the winning team and an enjoyable evening was had by all.
