Making primary physics matter

Science is often not taught by a specialist teacher at primary level and developing teacher skills and confidence is an important factor in getting children to engage with the subject and to believe they can be scientists. Ogden Primary Physics Professional Learning (P3L) has been developed to ensure teachers have the confidence and knowledge to deliver meaningful primary physics in a hands-on and engaging way.

“We know how hard it is for teachers to take time out of the classroom, but we believe P3L is a really valuable CPD opportunity for science leaders who can then cascade their newfound knowledge back at their school.” says Jackie Flaherty, teaching and learning lead for the Trust. “We are delighted with the feedback we have received from our first sessions at Kingston and Eton, and we are excited for the CPD days coming up.”

Four hands-on workshops are delivered over the course of a P3L CPD day bringing science to life with some amazing practical science activities, resources and ideas for how physics can be taught in the primary classroom.

The P3L programme has been designed to enthuse and excite primary science practitioners, as well as equip them with knowledge and ideas for delivering hands-on science in the classroom. Although science is at the heart of the P3L programme, English, maths and cross-curricular themes run throughout the sessions.

Delegates experience magnetic mathematics, electrifying English, the creative cosmos and the physics of light & sound. They gain newfound knowledge and confidence, as well as numerous resources to support them back in the classroom, including Space 4D cards, colour wheels, Uv beads, teachers’ guides and experiment cards.

“Scientific ideas and language do not have to be limited to the small amount of dedicated primary science time – they can be embedded throughout the curriculum, capturing curiosity, supporting primary progression and stimulating learning,” says Amanda Poole, one of the P3L trainers and Ogden lead for resource development. “Maths, design & technology, literacy, art … science can be interwoven into any number of subjects in the primary classroom and given a real-world context to inspire young learners.

“For P3L we have mapped the subject links across some of the key areas of the curriculum – highlighting books that can be introduced, key questions that can be asked and classroom activities that can be undertaken,” concludes Amanda.
