Leadership for physics outreach

The Leadership for Outreach and Public Engagement programme is open for applications: mentoring, workshops & peer group support.

Published: 17 May 2022

Applications are now open for the second cohort of the Leadership for Outreach and Public Engagement programme, which will begin in September this year. The programme is fully funded by the Trust in partnership with the STFC and is being facilitated by course leaders David Owen, from engagement consultancy Gurukula, and Helen Featherstone (consultant).

Following fantastic feedback from the first course, the programme will once again bring together a series of online interactive workshops, mentoring and peer group sessions. It will up-skill academic outreach leads in many areas, including developing their leadership style; advocating for outreach and public engagement at a senior department level; and navigating and managing departmental change and administration.

  • 91% of participants feel more confident leading outreach and public engagement as a result of the programme
  • 82% felt the programme had developed their knowledge and skills in leading outreach and public engagement
  • 82% reported that they had made substantial progress developing their leadership approach

The course has been designed to fit around academic roles and can be tailored to help achieve the goals identified by participants. The small peer group sessions help to ensure that the course meets the needs and expectations of those involved. The course lasts for ten months and participants with an expected minimum commitment of approximately three hours per month.

“The programme was incredibly useful – hearing about the challenges that others face in various roles also helped make me feel not alone!”

“Supporting and facilitating strategic approaches to outreach through this programme will help to develop and strengthen a positive culture in universities,” says Clare Harvey, Chief Executive of The Ogden Trust. “It will enable them to deliver more meaningful, impactful outreach which will better support participation, engagement and reach – ensuring opportunities and future pathways are open to all.”

The programme will run from 15 September 2022 to July 2023. The deadline for applications is 17:00, 24 June 2022. Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application in early July.

“I feel more reassured in what I do and have made some changes in what I do as a result of conversations during this programme. I think this is making a positive impact on the way others around me buy into what I do.”
