Feeling the force

More than 100 teachers from the Harris Federation are taking part in physics subject knowledge CPD with The Ogden Trust.

Published: 12 December 2023

This term, 120 science teachers from the Harris Federation of schools took part in a Subject Knowledge for Physics Teaching (SKPT) CPD conference, which was held on a staff training day. The bespoke SKPT training was delivered at the ExCel Centre, London with a team of expert practitioners from the Ogden Trust supporting the teachers throughout the day, as they explored the physics of forces.

“Like so many schools in England, we have a shortage of specialist physics teachers across the Harris Federation. This SKPT inset day was a fantastic way to up-skill our science departments so that more teachers can confidently deliver engaging physics in the classroom,” said Steven Chapman, Harris Federation Science Consultant for Physics

“This first face-to-face day has given the teachers knowledge and ideas to deliver KS3 and KS4 physics and has developed their pedagogy so they can better anticipate and address common student misconceptions in the topic forces, “ continued Steven. “With a school subsidy of £200 available for each teacher that competes the module, it really is a win-win for the Harris Federation – free CPD and additional funding to come.”

Under the guidance of an Ogden SKPT tutor, the teachers will now continue the forces module through online tutorials and independent learning. The group will reconvene in February 2024 for another face-to-face session where they will participate in a full day of practical workshops and evaluate their learning and complete their professional reflection.

“This was a great day of CPD,” says Jackie Flaherty, Head of Teaching and Learning for the Trust. “The room was buzzing with enthusiasm and questions, and the feedback from the day has been overwhelmingly positive. This was the first inset delivery of SKPT across a multi academy trust or federation of schools and it is a model that we would love to replicate. Working with a group of teachers like this creates a fantastic community of practice, where the teachers can support and encourage each other as they learn together. We look forward to supporting them over the coming months and seeing them again in person in February.”
