Yesterday, Sir Peter Ogden visited The Derby High School, Bury to officially open their new DISCOVER science centre. The space has been converted and refurbished with the support of an Ogden Trust grant. The new science laboratories include a facility for primary school science teaching and teacher CPD.
The Ogden Trust has a long relationship with the school dating back to its successful application to be a Science and Arts Specialist School in October 2002. They have hosted a researcher as part of the Scientists in Schools programme (2006), had a Teacher Fellow (2012) and were one of the early School Science Partnerships (2006–2015). They are now part of the Bury Primary Partnership which started in 2016.
Yesterday’s visit by Sir Peter comes 14 years after he officially opened a new performance space at the school when they formally announced their specialist status. During yesterday’s visit, Sir Peter learnt more about how the new centre had been conceived and developed and he saw some physics in action when he joined a Year 10 science GCSE lesson on electricity.
