Building physics teaching confidence and competence

SKPT intensive pilot programme for teachers in and around London: £5,000 school subsidy available.

Published: 20 May 2025

More than 1,350 subject knowledge for physics teaching (SKPT) modules have been completed since the Trust started delivering the programme in 2022, with momentum, funding and scale continuing to build.

DfE funding for the programme has now increased to £2.8 million and will support the delivery of 1,800 modules between 1 April 2025 and 31 March 2026. With the increase in funding, additional delivery models and larger school subsidies have been introduced to enable more teachers of physics to take part in this valuable CPD.

“In a subject where conceptual understanding and confident delivery are paramount, the SKPT programme offers a lifeline, equipping educators with enhanced subject knowledge and pedagogical approaches,” explains physics teacher and SKPT tutor, Jed Marshall.

“The blended learning model, combining face-to-face sessions with online tutorials and independent study, ensures a flexible yet comprehensive learning experience. Beyond the immediate subject knowledge, the SKPT courses foster a supportive network, creating a collaborative environment for ongoing professional growth,” adds Jed.

SKPT intensive

A new SKPT intensive programme is being piloted in London. Starting on 17 September, it is open to teachers who are delivering physics outside of their specialism in an English state school.

The programme will include all six SKPT modules, building classroom competence and confidence across the KS3/4 physics content, required practicals and teaching approaches. It will run every Wednesday afternoon from 1.45–4.45pm, with in-person sessions taking place every other week at Regent High School, Chalton Street, London, NW1 1RX (with easy access from Kings Cross and Euston)

  • 18 face-to-face sessions (starting 24/9)
  • 60 hours of self-paced online learning
  • Tutor support in a collaborative learning community

“SKPT has equipped me with theoretical knowledge and with new pedagogical strategies that I can directly apply in the classroom. My pupils are more engaged, participating more and displaying better understanding. I am monitoring changes in results, and I am hopeful that the increased engagement and participation will have a positive impact. SKPT is designed in a way that accommodates the workload of teachers. The content is delivered in a practical manner making it easy to pick up concepts that you can directly apply to your teaching.”
