An update from the Trust

18 March 2020

Following the announcement that schools will be closed to help in the management of the current COVID-19 pandemic, we wanted to address some of the likely questions regarding Ogden programmes, events and activities.

Ogden Partnerships

Existing partnerships
Inevitably, some school partnership events may have to be postponed or cancelled. We will make adjustments to the underspend that can be carried into 2020-21. If the remaining funds are less than £1,000 then partnerships can go ahead with next year's bid as normal and retain any remaining funds. If there is more than £1,000 remaining, this will be offset against their 2020-21 bid, but they will be allowed to go over £2,500 to include postponed events if this is possible.

If there are events that have been planned with non-refundable costs, partnership grants can be used to cover their costs. End of year partnership reporting is expected by the 1 July deadline as normal.

New partnerships
Activity plans for new partnerships (beginning year 1 in September 2020) are also expected to be received by the 1 July deadline, so please do use phone calls and video conferencing to agree your action plan for 2020-21.

Partnership Conference
In light of the current situation and national restrictions on social gatherings, our annual conference (which this year was due to place in Stratford-upon-Avon) has now been cancelled.

However, to ensure we are still able to offer our partnership co-ordinators support and an opportunity for sharing ideas and experiences, we will be hosting a virtual conference on 18 and 19 June 2020 via Zoom. Details will be sent direct to delegates.

Partnership Teacher Fellowships
We will continue to fund the Partnership Teacher Fellows as usual through the school closure. We understand that there will be significant disruption to your time with online teaching activity and potentially child care responsibility, but we hope you will continue to find time to work with your partnership remotely, whether planning for next year or sharing ideas about remote teaching.

Ogden Outreach Officers

The activities and working practices of all Ogden Outreach Officers should be informed by the guidance issued from their university. Please follow the guidance and stay safe.

School Physicist of the Year event

Given the expected impact of school closures we are looking at alternative options to celebrate outstanding school physicists and will be consulting with our outreach officers.

Senior Teacher Fellowships

Whilst many of the activities and events associated with our Senior Teacher Fellowships may be compromised by COVID-19 we will still be funding the fellowship; we hope the Senior Teacher Fellows will be able to use their fellowship time to work on the written resources and How to guides so that their projects can be shared more widely.

For those wishing to participate in the scheme in school year 2020-21 scheme, the deadline for applications has been extended to Friday 22 May. Applications to be made via the FlexiGrant portal.

Secondary CERN trips

The most recent application round for student CERN trip funding is now closed. Grants will be offered as normal but invoices should not be sent until there is confirmation whether the trip will go ahead. In some cases, it may be permissible to use the grant for non-refundable travel costs.

Early Career Teacher Development

Although the schools are closed, funding for our Early Career Teacher Fellows will still be met. We hope the teachers will use their fellowship time to develop their pedagogy, ideas and planning. Mentor support will still be available electronically.

For those wishing to participate in the scheme in school year 2020-21 scheme, the deadline for applications has been extended to Friday 22 May. Applications to be made via the FlexiGrant portal.

Teacher Network

Bookings for teacher network programmes and events for the 2020-21 academic year will continue as normal. However, the summer events in particular may be cancelled due to the pandemic. Please do not incur any non-refundable costs at this time and applicants for events will be kept up to date about cancellation.

Primary Physics Professional Learning courses

Our P3L programme for this academic year has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Information on our 20/21 programme is currently being finalised. If you want to be informed about future P3L dates, please sign up for Phiz e-news.

Teach Physics internships

In light of the evolving situation with COVID-19, we have had to cancel this year's Teach Physics programme.

Energy and Alumni Summer internships

Applications to our summer internship programmes are closed. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic no work-based placements will be made this year but where ever possible, online alternatives are being offered.

 Physics Education Grants

We appreciate that activities and events that have received an Ogden Physics Education Grant may be disrupted be the current COVID-19 situation. We will discuss these with the individual grant recipients.

Please be aware that all Ogden staff are currently working from home. The London office numbers remain operational (directing to mobiles) and staff are contactable via email. Work continues; should any cancellations, postponements or changes in our programmes be necessary we will contact anyone who might be affected.

Don’t forget the Ogden website has lots of useful resources which can be freely accessed on our website if you are setting challenges and task for your children to complete at home or you are working on plans for the return to school.
