A celebration of science

Last term, Ledbury Primary School, part of the Herefordshire East Ogden Partnership, celebrated science with our first science fair. The children were asked to work on their science project as an Easter homework challenge and more than 35 pupils rose to challenge.
We had a huge selection of projects submitted as children explored how to make water walk, extracted DNA from a kiwi fruit, built their own burglar alarm and made invisible ink; other children looked at how corrosive their favourite fizzy drinks are, investigated why we refrigerate milk and looked at how music affects animals – to mention just a few of the super science projects entered for the fair.
As a partnership we had allocated funding for each school so they could host a science show to kickstart and inspire a school science week. Pupils at Ledbury, inspired by their science show, were then invited to take on the homework challenge and carry out their own investigations. We organised the science fair as a way to engage families in the children’s science learning, to start conversations at home about science and develop science capital.
The children presented their projects in the school hall for the science fair celebration and shared their ideas, learning and enthusiasm with the other pupils and their families. The quality of the work was so impressive, and it was wonderful to see how inspired the children were. The feedback from all involved was so positive.
“I didn’t know any of this stuff before.”
Year 5 pupil“The response from the children was inspirational. The families worked together and made so much effort. It was a joy to visit the fair and listen to the children talk about what they learned.”
Teacher“We found out so much doing the research together.”

We decided not to judge the projects, but to celebrate everyone who took part. We most certainly intend to make this a yearly event as it was such a successful way of running a science fair – thank you to our Ogden representative Janinne Delorenzo for sharing this model.
