Kit in a Kase (KiaK)

The Centre for Effective Learning in Science (CELS) is part of the School of Science & Technology at Nottingham Trent University. One of their most successful projects has been ‘Kit in a Kase’ delivered to schools all over the Midlands and beyond.

Kit in a Kase (KiaK) activities are hands-on science activity sessions in the school classroom, laboratory or hall. These sessions are delivered by visiting scientists and students and involve a PowerPoint presentation interlaced with practical activities for every student to take part in. KiaK covers a wide range of topics across different key stages:

- Light up Materials                                              Years 7-9

- Forensic Science                                               Years 7-9

- Colour Chemistry                                               Year 6

- Environmental Oil Spill & Fair Testing                Years 5-6

- Bricks, Bananas and You (DNA unravelled)       Years 5-6

- The Body                                                            Years 3-4

- Animals and Adaptations                                    Years 1-4

- Materials                                                             Years 1-2

- Forensic Science                                                Years 1-4

Schools use KiaK as either an introduction to topics, enrichment activities, as part of science weeks or as rewards and treats. As the current demand for KiaK exceeds the capacity of the CELS outreach team to deliver it, The Ogden Trust has agreed to fund a programme to train and pay undergraduate science students to help deliver these activities. The funding will cover CRB checks, payment for their time, and transport costs.
