How to Grow a Scientist

Range High School was identified in 2006 as one of the leading comprehensive schools in the UK for A-level physics (Professor Alan Smithers, “Bucking the Trend”). It offers three separate sciences at GCSE and in 2006 began to develop their curriculum in advance of the new KS3 proposals to create conditions which would enable more students from Range and other surrounding schools to progress to study science at 16+. This project is being run over two years to devise a curriculum model to link proposals at KS3 to more personalised pathways to GCSE. Training was given to the science department and technicians in the requirements of specialist work in the separate sciences.

Next year the main focus of the project will move to support for the KS2 science curriculum and developing links with higher education institutions and industry to promote student transfer to science careers.
