British Schools Exploring Society (BSES)
The Ogden Trust and the British Schools Exploring Society offer bursaries of £1,000 to pupils at Specialist Schools sponsored by the Trust and Ogden scholars and alumni, for them to go on BSES young explorers expeditions. Aimed at 16-20 year olds, these are serious scientific expeditions to remote and challenging environments which carry out valuable field work and research. Participants require an interest in ecological and environmental science and a spirit of adventure. Each summer the British Schools Exploring Society run several expeditions to areas of remote wilderness, which have included in recent years, the Arctic, Amazon, and Ladakh.

During summer 2009 BSES have run four expeditions, one each to the Amazon and Himalayas and two to the Arctic, one kayaking and one mountaineering. Full details can be found on the BSES website.
To apply for 2010, follow the instructions on the BSES website, and email the Trust to notify us which expedition you have applied for. BSES also run gap year programmes which could be eligible for an Ogden Trust travel grant.
Accounts of Ogden scholars who have been on BSES expeditions can be found in our archive:
