Ogden Physicist of the Year Awards at Birmingham

Physicist of the Year Awards Presentations at Birmingham 2011

On the evening of July 6th 2011, an awards evening was held in the School of Physics & Astronomy. Nominated students for the Physicist of the Year Awards from schools in Birmingham & Solihull, together with their families and teachers, were invited on to campus to celebrate their achievements in Physics in 2010-11.

The schools had previously been invited to nominate one of their Year 12 physics students for an award, sponsored by The Ogden Trust, to celebrate their achievements in their physics studies over the year. Twelve students were put forward by their teachers, variously for their work ethic, outstanding academic achievements, enthusiasm, participation, positive attitude, acting as an exceptional role model, intuitive thinking, mature attitude and generally being an excellent ambassador for the subject.

The evening began with a buffet supper and an opportunity for the guests to chat with academics in the School of Physics & Astronomy, as well as with each other.

Dr David Evans, UK spokesman for the ALICE experiment at CERN, then gave a talk outlining the latest news from the Large Hadron Collider and the world of particle physics research, entertaining the audience with liquid nitrogen demonstrations as part of his presentation.

Certificates and book tokens were then presented to the winners by Tim Simmons, Chief Executive of The Ogden Trust, who told the students about the sort of continuing support The Ogden Trust could offer, and added his own congratulations for their achievements.

We very much hope that more schools will nominate students for awards in 2011-12 and look forward to another evening of celebrating physics in Birmingham & Solihull next year.

The Ogden Trust sponsor such awards in many regions of the UK and are considering a national follow- up event of some sort in future years.
