CERN@school
Led by Dr Becky Parker, Head of Physics at Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys in Canterbury, and from September 2010 an Ogden Physics Teacher Fellow, the CERN@school project gives secondary schools across the UK the opportunity to become engaged in university level physics research.
This is a major research project in which school pupils work with the latest technology from CERN to analyse cosmic radiation and collaborate with other students on data analysis. It is hoped the project will comprise an international network of cosmic ray detectors using a chip derived from Medipix2, a device developed at CERN to measure the position and energy of single photons hitting an associated detector.
Eight pilot schools across Kent are taking data each day which is then automatically uploaded to a server at the Langton Star Centre and made available to all participating schools via the CERN@school website.
