Five school physics students have been selected to represent the UK at the International Physics Olympiad. This July Matthew Donora, Andrew Hyer, David Kell, Sergei Patiakin and Gareth Wilkes will travel to Zagreb, Croatia and take part in a competition which brings together students from over 90 countries to solve problems posed through five-hour-long theoretical and experimental examinations. They will be accompanied by three leaders from the UK, and the whole party will be treated to an exciting social and cultural program alongside the competition.

To be selected for the team the students have already taken over 10 extra hours of physics exams and attended a four-day training camp, organised by the Ogden-sponsored British Physics Olympiad. The top five were selected from over 1,000 original entries. They are pictured at the British Physics Olympiad presentation afternoon on Thursday 29th April with Professor David MacKay, former team member and now the scientific advisor to the Department for Energy and Climate Change. The presentation afternoon also recognised the achievement of outstanding students in other British Physics Olympiad Competitions - the Physics Challenge, AS Competition and Experimental Project.

The Ogden Trust is a principal sponsor of the British Physics Olympiad. They are pleased to announce that for the 2010/11 competitions the Trust will provide a voucher to cover the costs of entering the British Physics Olympiad for up to 5 students from any school that has not entered a candidate in the last three years.
